Police are warning Scots to be vigilant after series of fake bank notes were found in circulation.

A collection of counterfeit £20 Bank of England notes have been spotted, with cops in West Lothian issuing an urgent appeal to residents asking them to check the legitimacy of their cash. The fakes are all branded with the serial number BB81 275037 and are reported as being of high quality, closing resembling genuine notes.

The counterfeit money also has a faulty silver foil patch without the hologram image change. The force have asked locals and businesses to check their money and report any suspicious notes to them.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Recently there has been a report of counterfeit Bank of England £20 bank notes in circulation . These are reported to be high quality closely resembling genuine notes with a serial number BB81 275037. It also has a faulty silver foil patch without the hologram image change.

“Businesses and members of the public are urged to stay alert and report an suspicious notes to Police.”
