Netflix subscribers are split over a new true crime documentary that delves into a real-life case that continues to ‘haunt’ viewers.
The streaming platform recently released a trailer for the upcoming series, which is expected to ‘stir up a lot of emotions’. Netflix has given a first look at their latest original series, American Murder: Gabby Petito.
The programme, set to premiere on February 17, explores the tragic murder case that sent shockwaves worldwide. The series will trace the events leading up to the death of Gabby Petito, who frequently shared her life on social media platforms.
A synopsis from Netflix reads as reported by Surrey Live: “In August 2021, 22-year-old Gabby Petito was killed by her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, while the young couple were on a four month road trip across the United States documenting their ‘van life’ journey on social media.
“Two months later, Laundrie was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and his parents were suspected of helping to cover up the murder. While taking viewers on a journey through Gabby and Brian’s final days together, the series will unveil the tragic reality behind their Insta-perfect life and reveal painful moments where their story might have taken a different turn.”
Netflix has not yet announced who will feature in their latest documentary, but the footage appears to include interviews with family members.
The documentary forms part of Netflix’s American Murder collection, which has seen two previous releases in 2020 and 2024. The Family Next Door, a feature documentary, delved into the tragic disappearance of Shanann Watts and her three children.
Meanwhile, the three-part series American Murder: Laci Peterson chronicled the search for a missing expectant mother and the ensuing case that devastated two families. Public opinion is divided over the production of these documentaries.

One viewer expressed their concern on social media, stating: “I honestly cannot believe this is a Netflix documentary. I feel bad for her parents. I hope they were on board?”
Another person echoed this sentiment saying: “Why does there have to be a documentary on this? Kind of feel it’s exploiting the sad situation that happened to her.”
Meanwhile, another person reflected on the sensitive nature of the subject: “A heartbreaking case. The documentary will likely stir up a lot of emotions.”
Conversely, the anticipation among some viewers is palpable. Over on YouTube, one user engaged with the trailer, saying: “This one haunts me I’m glad they made this one it looks really good.” And elsewhere, someone was gearing up for the release, remarking: “This will be a must watch.”
