MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. – The Salvation Army of Mercer County has been working to assist the community year-round, with winter being no exception. With the recent inclement weather, they have been operating warming shelters, and this year, Core Administrator Sgt. Melissa White tells us they have improved their service.

“While servicing those folks we’ve also went a little step beyond this year and provided food for them, and so we’ve provided 321 meals, 167 snacks, just trying to keep people off the street and safe,” said Sgt. White.

This year, the Mercer County Commission gave five thousand dollars to the Salvation Army, but Sgt. White says donations are still a necessity.

“Right now, again, the financial assistance is what’s most important, because it costs a lot to do this, like even with, thanks, you know, be to god for the county commission and what they’ve provided for us, that doesn’t county any of the food and the things that’s provided whenever there’s a shelter operation,” added Sgt. White.

Donations are accepted and appreciated year-round, and can be done in person or by mail. Their address and other information is available on their website.
