This is footage of the shocking moment a gangland hitman hell-bent on revenge fired shots at his rival in a car park – before being arrested at gunpoint.
Mohammed Islam was jailed for 12-years after being convicted of wounding with intent. The incident was caught on a CCTV camera and the footage has now been released by police.
The footage shows Islam – who was in a black Volkswagen Passat – arriving at the car park in question, armed with a silver handgun and confronting the victim. He chased his target around the car park as others ran for their lives.
Birmingham Live reports he fired the gun twice at the victim, but both shots missed. But the victim then tripped and Islam fired a final shot, hitting the casualty in the left thigh, before he and the two men he arrived with fled the scene, police said.
Police launched a major investigation into the incident, which took place at the car park on Charles Road in Small Heath, Birmingham, at around 7.50pm, on September 2, 2023.
West Midlands Police established it was a revenge attack, after the victim had threatened Islam with a knife on the same road earlier in the day. Police said the motive for that remained unclear.
Further footage showed Islam, 36, of Imperial Road, Small Heath, being arrested at gunpoint as he travelled in a taxi in Highgate. Police said he racially abused the officers, and denied involvement in the shooting in interview.
But CCTV, mobile phone analysis and evidence from officers who identified Islam from footage of him being threatened with the knife brought him to justice.
He was cleared of attempted murder but found guilty of wounding with intent and racially aggravated public order offences after abusing the officers following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court. He was jailed on Thursday, January 23.
Speaking after the case, Detective Inspector Matt Marston said: “This was a truly shocking outburst of violence, which has seen multiple shots fired and a man very lucky to have survived.”
The DI, of West Midlands Police’s Major Crime Unit, added: “Islam clearly wanted to cause his victim really serious harm and this could easily have become a murder investigation.
“We put a huge amount of effort into tackling gun crime in the West Midlands, and people who think it’s acceptable to carry or use weapons should be on notice that we will actively pursue them.”
