Roseanne Barr is planning a television comeback with a show she describes as a mix between “the ‘Roseanne’ show” and “The Sopranos.”
Fresh off releasing a MAGA rap video, the 72-year-old comic said her latest project is a series about the exploits of an Alabama farming family that battles drug gangs and the Chinese government.
“They save America with guns, the Bible, petty crime and alcoholism,” she told Variety.
Barr said she’s working on that show with former “Roseanne” consultant Allan Stephan. She said the seemingly dark comedy is based on her experiences as a farmer in Hawaii and will soon be shopped around for a buyer.
“It’s kind of like the Coen brothers thing,” she said, referring to the creative team responsible for films including 1996’s “Fargo,” which was turned into an FX series.
“Roseanne” ruled ABC’s airwaves between 1988 and 1997. The hit sitcom was brought back in 2018, when it again enjoyed great success before its star called former Obama Administration Valerie Jarrett a “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes” hybrid on social media.
She quickly lost the support of colleagues, who carried on without Barr after writers killed off the title character with an opioid overdose. The show has continued as “The Connors” since 2018.
During his first term as president, Donald Trump praised Barr’s short-lived 2018 comeback for drawing millions of viewers during a rally in Ohio.
“And it was about us,” the billionaire president said.
