On a recent episode of Homes Under the Hammer, one Scots couple was left with a huge renovation job in a very strange building located in Kirkcaldy, which left even property experts confused.

Having gone under the hammer, the three-bed end of terrace property originally came at a guide price of £90,000. Situated on a busy road with a variety of shops nearby, it was needing a new lease of life.

Scottish presenter Martel Maxwell pointed out missing floorboards, holes in the walls and even likely condensation and damp patches that had built up in the derelict property and needed some investigating.

She also showcased a set of stairs which required a revamp and safety-proofing by installing a bannister. “There’s lots to do, but it’s not a bad start,” exclaimed Martel before heading through to show the decently sized bathroom and kitchen area.

“If you had the budget you might want to give this kitchen the wow factor, you know I like to salvage where I can but it would make a huge difference,” Martel noted. “There are some cracked windows, so you need to factor that in but this will really improve energy efficiency.”

Upstairs, the property offered two decent sized bedrooms, alongside one room which was slightly more narrow – making it the perfect DIY opportunity for an office space or walk-in wardrobe.

It did offer great views over Kirkcaldy – but the mystery of the stairs on the first floor left Martel confused. “It would appear that it was once two properties that has been turned into one.

“Access to the garden is from the first floor. So you would enter the front door and come upstairs, out the back and downstairs to get to your back garden. It is an interesting layout to the property to say the least,” she added smirking.

Property expert declared he thought the property to be valued at £140,000 to £160,000 on completion of all the renovation, or £700-£750 per month for rent.

Having gone under the hammer earlier this month in a remote auction, Dan and stay at home mum Nicki made a successful bid of £138,000 to transform it into the perfect family home to sell on.

The home was unrecognisable, with the garden area fenced off and the whole property brought up to a high modern standard. “I think they have done a great job in contrasting the black with light interiors, it really makes it stand out,” noted property expert John.

Although not making a huge profit from what they invested, the Scots couple were likely able to bank around a healthy £8,000 – £13,000 after they looked to sell it on for £180,000.
