RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – A Federal District Judge granted a stay, pausing the freeze of federal funds for a week.

The judge also set a hearing for further arguments on Feb. 3.

The decision is an added layer of confusion for many, including lawmakers.

“Title one, funding for low-income schools, funding for student nutrition programs, breakfast and lunch funding for certain services provided to students with disabilities,” Sen. Tim Kaine said.

The Trump Administration says the goal of the freeze is to allow time to review and ensure Americans’ tax dollars are being used wisely.

The pause would have temporarily impacted healthcare research, education programs and other initiatives.

“The research that’s done at VCU, especially in the health space through the VCU hospital and healthcare complex, is significant in Norfolk. The research that’s done through Eastern Virginia Medical School and Hospital and Old Dominion University they are significant federal research. The same at UVA, the same at Virginia Tech,” Sen. Kaine said.

Senator Kaine says that although Trump’s Administration said the freeze would not impact Medicaid, several states had website outages.

“Individuals trying to access or enroll for Medicaid, they can’t do it. We’re trying to get information from DMAS, which is Department of Medicaid Assistance Services,” Sen. Kaine said.
