A Scots family is pleading for help to raise £15,000 after their grandad fell seriously ill while on holiday in Spain.

Jimmy Dott, 85, was enjoying the second day of his trip to Benidorm when he fell ill with an infection. He was initially rushed to a private hospital, but due to the huge fee, his family were forced to transfer him to a state facility in Alicante.

The Rangers fan is now suffering from sepsis and potential spinal damage, and his family are keen to bring Jimmy back to Glasgow.

The family has now set up a GofundMe campaign in a bid to cover the costs of the gruelling 30-hour journey to transport him home. They have raised £4,490 of their £15,000 target. Among those supporting the appeal is the popular Rangers pub the Bristol Bar in Dennistoun.

They shared the fundraising appeal to Facebook, writing: “We received some bad news today that one or our long term and favourite regulars Jimmy Dott has taken seriously ill on his holiday and is currently in hospital in Spain. The family are now trying to pull enough money together to get Jimmy back home to Scotland.

“If you can help please do and let’s get Jimmy back home to continue his treatment. Any help big or small would be greatly appreciated by the family at this stressful time.”

Jimmy was hospitalised on January 18 after travelling to Spain with his wife. His granddaughter Sarah Glass organised the fundraiser and they “don’t know the outcome at this time,” but that Jimmy was “giving us hope”.

She added: “My granddad is a very proud man and when he’s feeling better he will be having words with me for this but I can’t see them suffer financially we are all suffering enough worrying of his health which is most important. I have found an amazing service, an equipped ambulance to transport my grandad and Gran the long 30-hour journey from Alicante to Glasgow whilst being looked after medically.

“We will be forever grateful for any help offered. If you can help please do and let’s get Jimmy back home to continue his treatment.”
