Tesco is set to axe over 400 jobs that will impact both in-store and office workers. The UK supermarket giant is seeking “more efficient ways of working” to battle the competitive world of UK groceries.

The move comes one week after competitor Sainsbury’s confirmed it would be cutting about 3,000 jobs in a huge overhaul. Tesco’s plans will reportedly affect managers of Tesco Mobile Phone shops and those in its head office, in addition to staff of its in-store bakeries. The firm said that it is helping affected employees obtain work in its other departments.

Matthew Barnes, Tesco’s UK boss, said: “These are difficult decisions affecting our colleagues, but we believe they are necessary to enable us to invest in what matters most to our customers.

“Our priority is to support impacted colleagues and we will do everything we can to help them find alternative roles within our business. Today, we have almost 1,000 vacancies available.”

The news follows the announcement that Asda is terminating its Aldi and Lidl Price Match scheme a year after it was launched. It was the first of the big supermarket names to tackle its budget competitors by launching the campaign and slashing prices across a wide variety of items by an average 17 percent.

The popular money deal, which sees Asda price match items to prices in the budget retailers, is currently being phased out, but Asda has confirmed that it has not raised prices following the decision to discontinue the scheme.

An Asda spokesperson told the Daily Record: “We’re focussed on our own great Asda Prices not competitor comparisons. We’ve started 2025 as we mean to go on by cutting prices on thousands of products and there’s much more to come with Rollback.”
