Dumfries and Galloway councillors are set to discuss the local authority’s response to the Galloway National Park consultation.

A special full council meeting will take place next week – less than 10 days before a consultation on the proposal closes.

Last year, members agreed to push the Scottish Government for a referendum on the idea, but that has been repeatedly ruled out by Rural Affairs Minister Mairi Gougeon.

Now, on Wednesday, the elected members will get the chance to have their say on one of the most controversial issues in the region for many years.

They will discuss the council’s response to the consultation – with members entitled to make their own individual submissions.

NatureScot is acting as the Scottish Government reporter on the proposal to make Galloway Scotland’s third national park.

The Galloway National Park Association is fully behind the proposal, believing it would bring major investment and international attention to the region.

However, the No Galloway National Park campaign has a string of concerns, including the potential for over tourism, rising house prices and whether existing infrastructure could coupe with more visitors.

The consultation is available here.
