WEST, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) – School officials in Texas announced the closure of a school Wednesday due to an outbreak of flu.
The West Independent School District said the school would be closed Thursday and Friday of this week.
The district said the two-day closure is due to widespread flu and illness causing students and staff to miss days.
Classes would resume starting Monday, the district said.
According to data released earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it estimates there have been between 16 to 28 million cases of bird flu in the U.S. since Oct. 1, 2024.
The CDC said it estimates there have been between 190,000 to 420,000 hospitalizations and between 8,300 to 41,000 deaths resulting from the flu.
Symptoms of the flu include:
- Fever or feeling chills or feverish
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Some may experience vomiting and diarrhea
To help prevent the spread of flu, the CDC recommends getting the flu vaccine every winter, cover and coughs or sneezes, wash your hands often with soap and water, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and improving your air quality by bringing in fresh air from outside, purifying it or gathering outside.
