Patti Smith is speaking out after collapsing onstage at a show in Brazil.
On Thursday, the singer-songwriter took to Instagram to share an update on how she’s doing after word of her tumble spread on social media.
“This is letting everyone know that I am fine,” she wrote in the post. “A grossly exaggerated account is being spread by the press and social media.”
While onstage performing at Sao Paulo’s Cultura Artística Theater, the 78-year-old rocker fell backwards and hit her head on the ground. Audience members say she was then escorted off of the stage in a wheelchair.
Moments later, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer returned to the stage to perform a couple of songs including her hit “Because the Night.”
Paired with a photo of herself waving to the camera, she wrote in the post, “I was checked out by an excellent doctor and was absolutely fine. Please do not accept any other story. With all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention. Thank you everyone for your concern. Trust me I am fine.”
In an official statement from Soundwalk Collective, the group Smith was performing with, fans were asked to “refrain from posting at this sensitive moment.”
“Patti has suffered from an intense migraine the past couple of days and had some dizziness on stage, but she still wanted to be there for all of us and you and perform today. She is now being cared for by the best doctors in the most loving way and will be back on stage tomorrow night.”
This isn’t the first time Smith has had to cancel a show due to a medical emergency. Last year, the rock artist had to cancel a performance in Italy because of a “sudden illness” that led her to being hospitalized.
