FORT STWEART, Ga. (WTOC/Gray News) – Two U.S. Army soldiers were killed during a nighttime training accident in Georgia, the military said Friday.
According to officials at Fort Stewart, the two soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. Their names were not immediately released.
Authorities said in a statement the soldiers were involved in a fatal vehicle accident Thursday night during field training on the sprawling Army post.
A single vehicle was involved, and no one else was injured, said Maj. Charles Egan, a Fort Stewart spokesman. No other details were immediately released.
“We are heartbroken about this tragic accident and will do everything we can to support the Soldiers’ Families and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” said Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, 3rd Inf. Div. commanding general. “The entire division extends our deepest condolences to the Families of the Soldiers who died in this accident.”
Fort Stewart, located southwest of Savannah, is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.
