The internet is a great source of cleaning hacks with many ways you can clean faster and not harder.

One mum’s shortcut for keeping her toilet looking and smelling clean recently went viral on Facebook.

Her ‘little secret’ involved using the stuff you use to clean your dishes in the cistern of the loo and admitted she’d been doing this for the last 14 years.

Her post said: “[Put] Dishwashing liquid in the toilet tank compartment and every flush is fresh clean smelly bubbles and toilet always looks clean.”

However now an expert has now warned against it. Plumber Peter Daly, CEO of Master Plumbers, said people should not use products that aren’t intended for your toilet system, reports the Mirror.

Speaking to news.com. au, he said: “Master plumbers advises that it’s safest to use cleaning products specifically designed for flush toilets.”

And he said this advice was even more important for households who rely on a tank to collect their waste.

He added: “People living outside built up areas who use septic tanks should ensure the product used is compatible with septic systems.”

He also urged customers to consider the environment when selecting cleaning products.

If you’re now seeking a more eco-friendly method to get your toilet sparkling clean, you might want to think about using a pumice stone.

A savvy woman took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group to reveal how a £1.49 pumice stone from her local pharmacy worked wonders on cleaning grime from her toilet bowl. “Since moving into my new house a year and half ago the toilets in the house have always annoyed me,” she confessed.

Relaying her frustration, she added: “I’m guessing the people before didn’t clean the toilets much! I had tried everything, scrubbing, bleach. So for months I’ve had those loo things that coloured the water, but I could still see it.”

Determined for a solution, she explained: “Recently I’ve been pricing up new toilets, plumbers and new floors, because the state of the loos just had to change.”

Her lightbulb moment came when listening to the ‘Older and Wider’ podcast: “Last week while listening to Jenny Eclair and Judith Holders, Older and Wider podcast with Aggie McKenzie they were talking about removing limescale from the toilet.”

Astounded by the simple yet effective tip, she shared: “A pumice stone! It doesn’t scratch or damage. £1.49 from my local pharmacy has saved me hundreds of pounds! You’re welcome.”
