WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) – A Republic Airways flight aborted its landing at Washington, D.C., on Tuesday evening after air traffic control issued a warning about a nearby helicopter.
Flight 4514, a twin-engine Embraer ERJ 175, was approaching runway 19 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when the warning prompted the pilot to execute a sudden climb.
The aircraft, en route from Bradley International Airport in Connecticut, performed a right turn away from the Reagan Airport and ascended to a safe altitude.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware shows the plane was initially descending and reached an altitude of about 1,600 feet, while the helicopter was flying at roughly 300 feet.
The flight safely landed after the maneuver, but the incident occurred a day before a deadly midair collision between a helicopter and plane in D.C. that has raised concerns about air traffic safety in the area.
