School administrators searched a student’s backpack after a weapons detection system alert and found a loaded gun, according to officials.

MANSFIELD, Texas — A North Texas high school student was arrested after administrators found a loaded gun in a backpack, officials said Friday.

The weapons detection system at Legacy High School in Mansfield ISD alerted school officials that a student had a gun in a backpack as students were arriving for classes, the district said in a statement.

Administrators searched the backpack and found a loaded gun, the district said.

Mansfield ISD police arrested the student, according to the district.

“There is nothing at this time to indicate a specific threat against a student or staff member,” Mansfield ISD said in a statement. “We are grateful that our students and staff are safe and that the training and equipment we have invested in as a district worked.”
