Locals in West Lothian are campaigning to save their community playgroup which is set to close in February.

A petition was launched by a concerned parent to save the group, which she called the group a “vital resource” and “cornerstone” of the community.

The play group is based in West Calder at the West Calder Community Centre and is open to children aged two to five as an alternative to private or school nursery.

Eleanor Aitkenhead launched the petition after learning in December that the group would shut its doors in just a few months.

Her two-year-old daughter Alice attends the group and Eleanor wants to the group to stay active in West Calder.

She says the group has been around for decades and that she “relies heavily” on its services.

The petition on Change.org states: “As a parent who heavily relies on the services the playgroup offers, the news of its impending closure has hit us hard.

“This playgroup has established itself as a vital resource in our community, offering enriching activities and social experiences for our youngest community members.

“This playgroup has been a cornerstone of our community, offering invaluable support and joy to countless families over the years.

“There are no other playgroups in the surrounding villages within walking distance, meaning that parents and guardians will have to rely on buses or cars to travel to alternative venues. This will not only add unnecessary costs but also create inconvenience for many families.”

Our sister site Edinburgh Live spoke with Eleanor to hear about her thoughts on why the group should stay afloat.

She said: “I work from home Tuesday through Friday and the playgroup is a very important way for me get few hours to focus on work.

“I can’t afford private nursery, the costs are astronomical.

“I feel like the community is slowly losing things. Our Royal Bank of Scotland branch has shut down as well and it’s little things like that. It all takes from a small community feel when things like that go.

“It feels frustrating since West Calder is small village. We’ve always been about community and had a tight knit community spirit.”

Eleanor said that the group has also helped Alice make new friends and build social skills, since Alice is an only child.

She added: “She’s an only child and doesn’t have siblings at home. It’s a way for her to build confidence with interacting other kids.

“All these kids end up in same school or nursery so it’s nice to know they’ve got someone. As a parent, it’s comforting to know they’ve got wee friends.

“Community playgroups are so important for families. I think it’s resource that should be protected and looked after.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “Parents and carers who have been impacted by this decision have been offered alternative early learning and childcare provision.”
