Streamers are being given a second opportunity to catch up with a gripping British thriller that has kept audiences on edge over the past few years.
Two series have been released so far, with a third reportedly in the pipeline, but the BBC show is currently not available on iPlayer.
The addictive series stars Holliday Grainger of Strike fame and combines a familiar mystery with a chilling technological twist. In the first series of The Capture, Grainger’s DCI Rachel Carey investigates young soldier Shaun Emery (played by Callum Turner), who is accused of a crime he insists he didn’t commit, and she uncovers a dark conspiracy when she begins to piece together the evidence.
Series two introduces rising star politician Isaac Turner (Paapa Essiedu), who teams up with Carey when a deepfake video threatens to derail his career – and throw the entire country into chaos.
The show has been a massive hit with BBC viewers over the years, who now have another chance to catch up ahead of the potential third series, as reported by TV Zone this week.
Stylist named the series one of “the best British crime dramas to binge-watch”, while the Guardian described it as “thoroughly gripping”.
The series also impressed American viewers, with the Hollywood Reporter ranking it at the top of Peacock’s list of international dramas.
“Probably the best, and certainly the most thoughtful, of the initial Peacock offerings is The Capture, which premiered on BBC One last fall,” they wrote. “It’s a twisty journey that starts as a grounded exploration of the Panopticon-esque paranoia of the British surveillance state”, reports the Mirror.
“That it eventually becomes something convoluted and vaguely silly is a disappointment, but the six hour-long episodes at least kept me curious throughout.”
When the first season aired, one Reddit user enthusiastically asked: “How come no one is talking about The Capture?
“One of the best shows I’ve watched this year, I was surprised when I couldn’t find a post discussing the show…especially with its themes of surveillance and fake news being so prevalent in our day and age.”
Another person responded: “I watched it and thought it was great as well. There’s so many good BBC dramas that never even appear on the radar internationally, it’s a real shame.”
Yet another fan warned: “Legit scary show. Marianne, Evil and Haunting of Hill House are great and all but if you want to really freak the f*** out, watch this show.”
The BBC has yet to officially confirm a third season of The Capture, but streaming both seasons on Netflix could convince them there are fans out there begging for more.
