BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -If you’re looking for a fun way to celebrate Black History Month while potentially learning something new, you may be interested in a free movie screening brought to you by the City of Bluefield.
The City is bringing black history to life at the Granada Theater with the return of the “Black History Movie Night.” This year, they will be showing two movies.
On Wednesday, February 5th, there will be a showing of “Twenty Pearls: The Story of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority” that will tell how this historically black sorority was founded. Then the following week, there will a showing of the period drama film “The Banker” which tells the story of two of the first African American bankers in the United States.
“These two movies in particular, just wanted to show something that is really… it’s showcasing history, but also showcasing just the brilliance of what black women can do and the amazingness of what sisterhood can do when it comes to becoming the better version of ourselves in this world…” says Treyvon Simmons, with the City of Bluefield Board of Directors for District 1, “…Even if you don’t belong to a sorority or belong to a sorority just not that one, just come out and learn and be able to enjoy yourself and fellowship with other people in the community because, I mean, it’s going to be exciting, and the only way we can get better as a country is if we learn from one another.”
The first movie will be held at the Granada Theater on Wednesday, February 5th at 4:00 pm, and the second movie will be shown on Tuesday, February 11th at 4:00 pm. Again, the showing will be free with sold concessions.
The City of Bluefield will be posting more information on their Facebook page.
