The dad of sisters who went missing in Aberdeen says he has “never felt such pain” after he was told two bodies had been recovered from the water during searches of the River Dee.
The family of Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, both 32, have been left “devastated” after being informed that search teams had discovered bodies on Friday. Miklos Huszti, from Hungary, was left heartbroken after being informed of the tragic news.
The sisters are part of a set of triplets and and their father says the third triplet collapsed when she was informed.
The 63-year-old shared his heartache saying the grim discovery shattered their triplet sister Edit, brother Jozsef and the rest of the family.
He told Hungarian news site SZON: “My son called me to say that they had probably found Henrietta. She has a tattoo of an angel, and they’d identified her based on that. I have never felt such pain before. Edit, my third daughter, also completely collapsed.”
A massive search operation was launched after the sisters were reported missing by their landlord, who they had sent a text to on the night of their disappearance confirming they would not be returning to their city centre flat. Police had called off searches of the River Dee after three weeks before the bodies were discovered in the morning and evening of January 31.
Officers investigating their disappearance stated there was nothing to suggest any suspicious circumstances or criminality. Dive teams had been seen in the river throughout January searching for the pair, with a police boat patrolling the river on Friday morning following the discovery of the first body.
Coastguard search and rescue workers were at the scene assisting with the search, patrolling the banks of the river, with police confirming the second body was found later that same evening. Miklos also told the outlet he had not spoken to his daughters for about 12 years after losing contact but felt “sick” after being told they had disappeared.
He was updated during the search by son Jozsef and prayed there had been a misunderstanding and that his daughters were still alive. He added: “For weeks I had hoped that they would be found safe and sound. But deep down I knew that something had happened to them. And about a month ago I had a bad feeling. I told my wife that I was afraid that the girls would be in trouble. I wish I had not been right.”
It is believed relatives are now working to get the siblings’ remains flown back to Hungary. A fundraiser, which was launched by friend of the Huszti sisters, Anita Vida, to help support the family, has raised more than £5,000 towards the bereaved family’s costs.
Meanwhile, flowers and tributes were left outside Aberdeen Boat Club, near where Henrietta and Eliza disappeared. Police have since thanked the public for their assistance with the investigation, and added they remain in contact with the Huszti family following Friday’s tragic recoveries.
Superintendent David Howieson said on Friday: “Our thoughts remain with the Huszti family and we are keeping them fully updated following these recoveries. We know how much of an impact this has had in Aberdeen and much further afield and I would like to thank everyone who has assisted with our investigation.”
