A 24-year-old man flew to Spain, bought a bottle of olive oil and flew home again all for less than the same bottle would have cost him in a supermarket in the UK. Callum Ryan made the incredible journey of 1,409 miles to Spain, managing to buy olive oil for less than the average UK price. After a casual chat with his girlfriend, Beca Morgan, about the exorbitant cost of olive oil in the UK, Callum, who had already planned a trip to Alicante, promised her he’d bring back a bottle instead of spending £7.38 – their regular expense.

Callum found that his entire escapade, which included the return flights and the purchase of olive oil, totalled less than the typical UK price tag of £7.38. He flew from Luton Airport to Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport for just £3.90, snagged a bottle of olive oil at £2.19, and caught a flight back home for a mere £1 – all adding up to £7.09.

Callum said: “Before I went away, we were moaning about the price of olive oil and I thought I would be able to grab some in Spain for cheaper. When I realised my flight there and back, and a bottle of olive oil was cheaper than the average bottle in the UK I thought it was unreal.”

“Not only is Spanish olive oil better, but I got a day on the beach, had a swim and saved on the pasta dish – no stress at all.”
