Barry Ferguson is certain Rangers are on to a winner with Lyall Cameron.
The legendary Ibrox skipper is a huge fan of the Dundee ‘standout’ and reckons he is more than good enough to play under Philippe Clement in Govan after the club announced the pre-contract capture of the Dens Park star. He will move in the summer unless a late deal can be thrashed out tonight between the two clubs – something the Record Sport columnist made reference to.
However, when it comes to the 22-year-old’s ability, he is in no doubt he will succeed at Rangers and reckons his best footballing years are still ahead of him. Homegrown talent is something the Ibrox club are looking to bring to the club more regularly. Connor Barron came in from Aberdeen last summer, and now Cameron is next in line with Ferguson adamant that Cameron will become a very important player for Rangers when that moves is officially completed.
Speaking on Go Radio, he said: “Delighted. He’s a player we have spoken about many of times. Obviously it was Lyall and Luke McCowan – who has went to Celtic in the summer – they two were standouts last season. Again, he’s just carried that form on and I think it is a brilliant piece of business.
“I’ve seen him plenty of times and I think he’s good enough to play at a club like Rangers. There is no doubt in my mind. 22 years of age, still his best football years in front of him and it is great to see that Rangers are looking at homegrown players from other teams. He certainly fits that bracket. I am excited to see him come in the summer.
“Listen, it might change. He could come tonight who knows? They might try and strike a deal. But Rangers have managed to seal that deal and as I said I am absolutely delighted because I think he can become a very important player for Rangers.”
Speaking earlier today, Nils Koppen told the Rangers website: “I am delighted that we have agreed a deal for Lyall to join the club and to continue his career at Rangers come the summer.
He is a talented young player, who has already gained great experience in the Scottish Premiership, and adding young, Scottish talent to our first-team squad is hugely important to all of us at the club. Lyall has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing him continue to grow at Rangers in the coming years.”
