Dom Thompson says it’s up to him to kickstart his career at Motherwell and hopes to do enough to earn a new deal in the summer.

That can only be good news for Motherwell fans, who could see the best of the 24-year-old.

Thompson is on a short-term deal until the end of this summer, having been released from his contract at Blackpool, and where he goes from here is up to him.

He said: “Speaking with the previous manager the move happened in quick succession, maybe over a week.

“I know Blackpool were looking to get rid of me, it wasn’t working there, so we looked for options.

“This came up, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

“It’s a chance for me to kickstart things. Playing games like that, against top sides like Celtic, and from what I’ve seen already, with St Johnstone, they’re all good teams, and it’s good competition.

“If I can get playing and get regular games and showing my best self, it can do well for me.

“It’s up to me. I guess that will come with performances, if the up-aboves feel that I’ve performed well enough then maybe there will be an offer on the table.

“That’s just how football goes.”

Thompson suffered cramp during the 3-1 defeat at home to Celtic on Sunday and was replaced by Davor Zdravkovski in 76 minutes, but enjoyed the game, if not the result.

He said: “That’s what I’m here for, these kinds of games. I’ve had some similar in my career so far, but this is what I’m here for.

“It was a tough game, but the boys gave it everything, and we need to take that performance into the following games.

“We did well to contain Celtic in the first half. There were moments for the goals, but other than that I think we held a good shape, and kept doing what was asked for us – we did all right.

“They scored the third in the last minute of the game, but coming away with a 2-1 would probably have been fair.

“The way we played against a top side should fill us with some confidence going into other games.

“They’re top of the table, but we feel as though we can compete with any team in this league, and especially with the ones we’ve got coming up, we’ll be looking to take three points.”
