A state-of-the-art Perthshire recycling plant, set to open in 2026, is expected to create 50 jobs.

Gateshead-based GAP Group Northeast, which specialises in recycling electronic waste, has received a seven-figure funding package to expand its operations.

The Glenfarg site will enable the company to safely breakdown and recover ferrous and non-ferrous materials along with difficult-to-recycle rigid plastics.

The business will then sell the raw material to manufacturers to be used again in new products.

The site will be powered 100 per cent by green energy generated by onsite wind turbines.

GAP Group Northeast was founded in 2005 and is now one of the largest electrical waste processors in the UK with 150 employees.

GAP Group North East director Peter Moody, said: “Our investment of over £9 million will establish a state-of-the-art fridge recycling plant at Binn Eco Park in Glenfarg.

“This facility is set to become one of the most environmentally friendly in Europe, aiming to achieve Waste of Electric and Electronic Equipment Label of Excellence (WEEELABEX) status, a prestigious accreditation for excellence in Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling. It will be one of only two such facilities on the UK mainland.

“The Binn Eco Park, situated in Glenfarg, is an ideal location due to its existing focus on green energy and environmental sustainability.

“The site is well-positioned to minimize disruption to the local community.

“Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for April 2025.

“We have already commenced local recruitment, however, this project will create up to 50 jobs over the next 12 to 18 months, contributing positively to the local economy.

“We have worked with HSBC UK for two years and the team continue to provide support, taking the time to understand our industry and the needs of our business.”

HSBC UK relationship director Ben Foster said: “We are delighted to support GAP Group North East with their continued growth strategy.

“The expansion into Scotland is a positive step which will contribute greatly to the circular economy with the new site in Perthshire supporting the reduction of recycling exports in Scotland overall.”

Other GAP Group divisions include fridge recycling facilities in England, processing WEEE derived plastics, general haulage and logistics.
