TEXAS, USA — Walmart shoppers in 20 states -including Texas- should check their refrigerators for a potentially “deadly” product by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
On Jan. 27, the FDA upgraded its current classification of Marketside Broccoli Florets to Class 1, which is the most severe type of recall.
The 12-ounce bags, created by Braga Fresh, were originally recalled on Dec. 27, 2024, as a precautionary advisory for the risk of being contaminated with a type of bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms of this organism include fever, headaches and nausea.
Per the initial report, the health concern was first found at a Texas storefront by the Texas Health & Human Services.
Now, that same product is at an even greater risk of causing harm. Roughly 5,900 bags of broccoli across 20 states are impacted by the updated status of the recall, according to the FDA.
Such states include Washington, Arkansas, California, Colorado and Wyoming, to name a few.
To identify the bags, check for a “Best if Used by” date of Dec. 10, 2024, with a UPC code of 6 81131 32884 5 on the back and a lot code of BFFG327A6 on the front.
What is a Class 1 recall?
According to the FDA, recalls are broken down into three categories: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3.
Class 1 is the most serious type, described as an instance where using a product can create serious health issues or even death.
Meanwhile, Class 2 can prompt temporary health problems, while Class 3 means exposure likely won’t cause any health ramifications.
