INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Hundreds of motorcyclists rode through the streets of Indianapolis in support of a 14-year-old boy who was recently assaulted while riding his dirt bike.
Over 500 motorcyclists enjoyed a ride Sunday down High School Road in Indianapolis – a ride planned to lift up 14-year-old Jordan. The teenager was riding his dirt bike Jan. 25 when he was assaulted by a man in an incident that was caught on surveillance video.
“This here is heartfelt,” said John Glass, one of the motorcyclists who turned out to support Jordan. “You know, he doesn’t need to be afraid to ride a minibike.”
The suspect in the case was identified as 46-year-old Jason Harrell. He is accused of pushing Jordan to the ground and punching him as well as threatening to kill the teen and his family. Court documents allege Harrell told Jordan, “Stay out of the road or I’ll kill you.”
“No matter what is going on in your life, you don’t touch a kid. There’s no excuses for any of that, and I’ll tell you right now, the biker community is number one for helping kids out,” Glass said.
Jordan’s family says the outpouring of support for the 14-year-old was overwhelming.
“I had to stop. I cried and hugged Jordan, and was just like, ‘Do you see all these people that are here for you?’” said the teen’s mother, Brittany Schwitzke. “We’ve got to all come together and protect the kids, and Jordan’s got a lot of people who have his back.”
Court documents say Schwitzke told police that Harrell would frequently become upset by neighborhood kids riding motorized bikes either on the sidewalk or in the road. Harrell himself allegedly told police children riding on motorbikes “plagued” the neighborhood. He denied pushing or hitting Jordan, saying he only yelled at him for his “habitual” behavior, according to court documents.
Harrell was charged with battery and intimidation. He remains in jail with a court hearing scheduled for Feb. 25.
