A bicyclist was struck and killed Monday night by an unmarked police vehicle in Norwalk, Conn.
The incident happened just after 6 p.m. at the intersection of Connecticut and Fairfield Avenues, Norwalk Police Chief James Walsh said in a statement on Tuesday.
At the time of the crash, the police cruiser was “responding to a call for service,” Walsh said.
The victim, identified by state police as 48-year-old Manuel Bonilla-Gomez, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to an incident report obtained by The Norwalk Hour, Det. Andrew Roncinske was driving east on U.S. Route 1 in a vehicle equipped with emergency lighting.
Bonilla-Gomez, who was riding a bicycle, approached the Route 1 intersection where a red light was displayed. He reportedly did not stop and proceeded into the intersection, where he was struck by the cruiser.
The victim was initially described as a pedestrian, but the Connecticut State Police later clarified the person was riding a bicycle.
Norwalk is located on the northern shore of the Long Island Sound, approximately 45 miles northeast of Midtown Manhattan.
