North Lanarkshire councillors have agreed that Motherwell will host a half marathon event in August.
Members of North Lanarkshire Council’s Communities Committee decided on Monday on having the half-marathon on Sunday, August 3, with the race starting and finishing at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
In addition to the race itself, Ravenscraig Sports Facility will serve as the hub for a host of free family activities during the event, featuring soft-play areas, bouncy castles, and a variety of exciting family games.
These activities will be supported by North Lanarkshire’s wider sports development team, ensuring a fun and engaging atmosphere for the whole community.
North Lanarkshire Provost, and Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Kenneth Duffy, welcomed the news.
He said: “I have been involved with this project since 2023, collaborating with local running clubs to ensure we create something special for our community.
“I am delighted that Motherwell will be front and centre with this new event, bringing together families, running enthusiasts and the wider community together to promote health and well-being.
Local runner Derek Watson, representing Motherwell based Papercup Run Club, has also given the plans his backing.
He added: “Papercup Run Club formed in February 2024 and has been a great outlet for people in the local community to improve their physical and mental health and tackle isolation, whilst supporting an independent coffee shop.
“Each week the group is going from strength to strength and our numbers keep growing. We want to remove barriers to participation in sport so there it’s totally free to take part and open to all ages and abilities.
“I’m delighted that North Lanarkshire Council have listened to our calls and given the green light to a Motherwell Half Marathon. It will be welcome addition to the annual race calendar and hopefully attract to runners across the local authority and further afield.”
Details on how to sign up for this much-anticipated event will be announced soon by North Lanarkshire Council.
Runners and families alike are encouraged to stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
