A person has died after being hit by a train on a busy Scots railway line.

Emergency service workers yesterday at 5.30pm raced to Johnstone station in an incident that closed all rail lines via the station after receiving reports of a casualty on the tracks. The attending officers and paramedics found that a person had tragically died at the scene, reports Glasgow Live.

All lines were closed between Kilwinning and Paisley Gilmour Street for more than two hours following the incident. ScotRail services between Glasgow Central and Ayr, Largs and Ardrossan were cancelled as platform 1 at Johnstone railway station remained closed until around 9.20pm. Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

One passenger to the restricted station told the Daily Record: “My first train got cancelled. When I arrived at Johnstone station, it was closed and I had to be escorted to my car that was parked in the multi-story car park. There were police everywhere.”

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Johnstone railway station at around 5.30pm yesterday (3 February) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the procurator fiscal.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 17:41 on 3 February 2025 to attend an incident at Johnstone Train Station. An ambulance, two special operations response teams (SORT) and a trauma team were dispatched to the scene.”
