North Lanarkshire has the third most active smokers in Britain.
Research conducted by nicotinepouches.net analysed Tesco.com to reveal the average cost of a pack of cigarettes in 2024.
The cost of an average pack was then divided by 20, to find an average cost of per cigarette in the UK.
The cost of a cigarette was then multiplied by an amount of cigarettes smoked per day.
And it was discovered that there 20.8 per cent of people in North Lanarkshire are actively smoking – behind only Fenland (22.1 per cent) in east England and Blackpool (21.3 per cent).
The only other Scottish locations to place in the top 20 were West Lothian (eighth with 19.5 per cent) and Glasgow (ninth with 19.1 per cent).
Miikka Saloseutu from nicotinepouches.net said: ““Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable diseases in the UK. It is responsible for nearly 80,000 deaths each year.
“When cigarettes are smoked, they produce harmful chemicals like tar and carbon monoxide.
“These are the primary contributors to the health risks associated with smoking, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues.
“While nicotine is addictive, it is not the primary cause of the most serious health problems associated with smoking.
“Nicotine pouches can be a helpful tool for people trying to quit smoking because they provide a controlled and safer way to manage nicotine cravings without the harmful effects of smoking traditional cigarettes.”
The report also contains ONS data, revealing the highest percentage of smokers in each UK local district between 2023-2019.
This ranking was generated to illustrate which parts of the UK are most likely to spend money on cigarettes.
It reveals Brits that smoke a quarter of a packet of cigarettes (five cigarettes) per day spend an average of £24.90 per week.
This is £108.20 per month and £649 for six months. A smoker of a quarter of a packet will spend an average £32,461 over 25 years.
