In a chilling incident at Rigberska School in Örebro, central Sweden, a gunman was seen prowling the school corridors and firing shots, leading to panic as people ran for cover.

The attack this morning resulted in approximately 10 individuals being fatally shot with an automatic weapon at the adult education centre, which was promptly placed on lockdown following reports of “bangs, probably gunfire“.

Students and staff were evacuated amidst the chaos.

Harrowing new footage from the scene shows the armed assailant bending down, seemingly to peer into one of the rooms, before noticing someone filming from outside and charging towards them, prompting the observer to flee in terror.

Another video captures a group of individuals sprinting past a children’s playground while gunshots echo in the background. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has labelled the event “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history” and conveyed his condolences, stating, “We also bear their grief”.

Local media report that during the ordeal, trapped students and staff sent desperate texts to family members, with one message reading simply “I love you”. Swedish Police have confirmed that around 10 people were killed in the tragedy, including the shooter, reports the Mirror.

Police in Sweden have confirmed that around ten people have lost their lives in the incident, with the total number of injured currently unclear. At a press conference held at 6pm local time, authorities also revealed that the shooter, believed to be 35 years old, is among the dead and is thought to have acted alone.

In a statement, Swedish Police said: “During the afternoon, several investigative measures connected to the case have been carried out at various addresses in Örebro. Work at the crime scene continues, including technical personnel.”

The police added that while they believe the perpetrator acted alone, they cannot rule out the possibility of other perpetrators being connected to the incident. King Carl XVI Gustaf has also expressed his condolences to those affected, saying: “It is with sadness and dismay that my family and I have received the information about the terrible atrocity in Örebro.

“We send our condolences tonight to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts at this time also go to the injured and their relatives, as well as to others affected.”

He also praised the emergency services, saying: “My family and I would like to express our great appreciation for the police, rescue and medical personnel who worked intensively to save and protect human lives on this dark day.”
