Tiger Woods has announced the passing of his mother, Kultida, in a heartfelt statement on social media.
The golfing icon paid tribute to his “biggest fan,” and credited her with being the driving force behind his illustrious career. The 15-time major winner didn’t reveal his mum’s cause of death but she was in the crowd when Woods played in the TGL against Rory McIlroy in Florida last week.
Woods wrote on X: “My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable. She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible.
“She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mom.”
Woods has often spoken about how Kultida inspired him to wear red on the final day of major tournaments, believing it to be his ‘power colour’ as a Capricorn.
He even named his apparel line Sun Day Red in homage to this tradition. Kultida was a familiar presence at her son’s tournaments, notably present at Augusta in 2019 when Tiger clinched his 15th major title. She was also there to witness his poignant comeback to professional golf in 2022 after a near two-year hiatus due to a severe car accident that almost ended his career.
US President Donald Trump paid his own respects, posting online: “I was just informed that Tiger Woods’ wonderful mother, Kultida, has passed away – she has gone on to greener fairways! Kultida Woods was an amazing influence on Tiger, and gave him much strength and brilliance. Melania and I send our love and players to Tiger’s family.”
Woods is due to host the Genesis Invitational next week, but his participation is now uncertain following his loss.
