North Ayrshire Trading Standards have seized 250 “illicit vapes” from stores in Irvine.

Routine visits by Trading Standards officials on Monday, February 3, led to the discovery in two separate stores in the North Ayrshire town.

“Illicit vapes” can contain banned substances, exceed legal limits for nicotine or fail to meet safety standards.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “The local community continue to highlight concerns of illicit vape products, and the apparent ease our young people have in acquiring these age-restricted items.

“Police Scotland and North Ayrshire Trading Standards conduct regular partnership visits to vape store distributors.

“On Monday, February 3, North Ayrshire Trading Standards were conducting routine visits in preparation for the upcoming ‘disposable’ vape ban, and found two stores in Irvine selling illicit vape products. 250 vape units have subsequently been seized.

“Illicit vapes can exceed nicotine strengths, vape juice volumes, include banned flavours, or fail to meet UK safety standards. If you suspect a retailer is selling to the underaged or selling illegal products, you should report it.

“You can contact Police Scotland on 101, or your local Trading Standards office, or Crimestoppers Scotland on 0800 555 111.”
