Ransomware might sound like something from a science fiction novel but it is increasingly being used by heartless scammers to steal money and data.

A Ransomware attack is a type of malicious software (malware) that blocks access to a device- like a laptop- or its data.

This is usually done by encrypting files, according to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Criminal groups then demand a ransom in exchange for decryption. In some cases, attackers also steal data and threaten to leak or delete it. Cybercriminals do this by gaining entry into a network, establishing control, and installing new malware software.

The malware is then triggered, locking devices and encrypting data across the network, making it inaccessible, before victims receive an on-screen notification detailing the ransom amount and payment instructions- usually requiring cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.

Police Scotland and the NCSC have advised those affected not to pay the ransom demands as there is no guarantee that you will get access to your data or device.

To protect yourself against ransomware, Police Scotland advise you to make regular backups of important information on a USB, external hard drive or the cloud.

If you have been affected by ransomware, the force notes that it is important to try and establish how the attackers gained access to your network to prevent future attacks and open an antivirus software to run a full scan.
