DALLAS — Dallas native Sha’Carri Richardson is known for her fierceness and fashion on the track. Now, the Olympian is bringing her fierceness and fashion to this year’s Met Gala.
The glitzy annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York will be May 5. This year’s theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and the dress code is “Tailored for You.”
Organizers announced the host committee for fashion’s biggest night Tuesday, and it includes Richardson, her fellow Olympian and Texas native Simone Biles and her husband Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens.
Richardson, 24, is from Dallas and attended Carter High School, where she starred on the track team. Last year, she came back from the Paris Olympic Games with a silver and gold medal in the 100-meter and 4×100-meter events.
Biles is considered among the greatest gymnasts of all time and has won 11 Olympic medals.
The committee members include personalities across art, film, literature and music, as well as sports.
Others on the Met Gala host committee include Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky, rapper and singer/songwriter André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Grace Wales Bonner, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Regina King, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Olivier Rousteing, Tyla, Usher and Kara Walker.
LeBron James, Luka Doncic’s new teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers, is an honorary co-chair of the gala this year. Actor Colman Domingo, auto racer Lewis Hamilton, musician and designer A$AP Rocky, and musician Pharrell Williams are the co-chairs of the event.
’’Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ will explore the role of sartorial style in forming Black identities, focusing on the emergence, significance, and proliferation of the Black dandy,” Vogue reports.
