First responders worked to rescue a tractor-trailer driver who became trapped in his vehicle after it flipped sideways on the New Jersey Turnpike during Wednesday morning rush hour.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. at Exit 16E, according to WABC in Secaucus.

Four of ten I-495 tollway lanes leading to the Lincoln Tunnel were blocked by the overturned truck. Commuters headed into Manhattan were advised to try the George Washington Bridge or Holland Tunnel, where there were reportedly long delays. Only three eastbound lanes I-495 lanes were accessible as rescue crews tend to the crash site.

The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately clear. The truck driver wasn’t immediately identified and their condition is unknown. WABC reporter Heather O’Rourke called it “worrisome” that rescue workers had spent at least a couple hours trying to extricate the driver with nothing to report.

New Jersey officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
