Netflix has released a trailer for an upcoming drama based on a true story you won’t want to miss – and it features an unrecognisable Outlander star.
Inspired by one of the worst scandals in UK history, Toxic Town centres on a group of women whose babies are born with mysterious disabilities.
They soon uncover the source of the issue and come together to hold those responsible to account.
Led by Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker and featuring an all-star cast of familiar names, this four-part miniseries could become one of Netflix’s biggest hits of the year when it arrives on the platform later this month.
A new trailer dropped today (Wednesday, 5th February) teasing an inspiring yet heartbreaking battle propelled by a group of mothers who will do anything to keep their families and community safe.
Also starring Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood, Bridgerton’s Claudia Jessie and Bank of Dave’s Rory Kinnear, the cast is an impressive roster of British talent.
Outlander enthusiasts will also be thrilled as Lauren Lyle will feature in a supporting part, having previously embodied the fan-favourite role of Marsali Fraser.
She appears in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the trailer alongside Kinnear, looking worlds away from her character in the 18th Century-set historical drama.
Lyle’s character Dani Holliday also appears in a first-look still from the show, next to Kinnear again and holding a map during a meeting at a local pub.
Fans of Outlander might easily miss her as she’s sporting straightened hair and a smart, modern suit – a stark contrast to Marsali’s usual frocks.
Netflix subscribers are already eagerly awaiting the new series and can’t wait to see some of their favourite UK stars take on the scandal.
When the trailer was uploaded to YouTube, one user replied: “Looks brilliant, excited to see more of Jodie and Aimee!”
“Has a great cast. Looks promising,” someone else agreed. And another said: “Claudia !!!! Omg.”
Another user replied: “An emotional show we aren’t ready for and we didn’t know we needed.”
And a final viewer commented: “Wow insane that this is based on a true story.
“Oh man now I have to go Google this because it’s heartbreaking and sad yet the MOTHERS are inspiring and fought for their kids!!”
Multi-award-winning writer Jack Thorne has penned the series, having previously worked on His Dark Materials for the BBC as well as the Enola Holmes films and Netflix’s Joy.
Rounding out the full cast are Robert Carlyle, Brendan Coyle, Joe Dempsie, Ben Batt, Stephen McMillan, Michael Socha, Karla Crome, Matthew Durkan, Kobi Sadler and Toby Eden.
A synopsis reads: “Based on the real life story of one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals, Toxic Town is the story of the people at the heart of the Corby poisonings.
“Focusing on the mothers, who took on a David and Goliath battle for justice, the series traces through the years of their fight as a terrible truth comes to the surface.”
Toxic Town will be released Thursday, February 27 on Netflix.
