A fundraising campaign has been launched to brighten up Castle Douglas’ war memorial.

The sculpture on the roundabout at the top of King Street is in need of a clean.

And the Castle Douglas branch of Legion Scotland also wants to install lights so it can be illuminated at night.

The committee has now launched an online fundraiser with a £1,000 target so that the work can be carried out ahead of this year’s Remembrance commemorations.

Committee member and former Royal Engineer, Johan Van Heerden, said: “As a committee we decided to try to raise the funds to get it cleaned.

“We need someone with the right chemicals to do it and the guys who we have a quote from deal with memorials all around the area, they’re specialist cleaners.

“We’ve some money set aside but are looking to raise money as well.

“If we get a bit extra we’d like to update the area. At night time it’s not lit up so we’re going to try to get some solar panelled lights and a few other things.”
