Jose Fonte has revealed he once came close to a stunning switch to Scotland after holding talks with Celtic AND Rangers.

The veteran defender, 41, spent eight years in the Premier League, most notably starring alongside Virgil van Dijk during a golden period for Southampton. A no-nonsense centre-back, Fonte also played a key role in Portugal’s incredible Euro 2016 triumph, striking up a close friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fonte partnered ex-Gers stopper Bruno Alves throughout his international career and revealed he almost followed his countryman to the Premiership after attracting interest from Glasgow’s big two. Fonte – who also played for Crystal Palace, West Ham and Lille during an illustrious career – always wanted to sample the famous Old Firm atmosphere and admits the derby is still high on his bucket list.

Speaking to BoyleSports about Premier League Betting, Fonte said: “At one stage, there were talks with both Celtic and Rangers, but in the end nothing materialised and that’s a shame. They are both huge clubs, amazing clubs and it would’ve been great to play for either of them.

“I’ve never had the chance to experience that derby and when I get some time I’m going to go as a spectator and experience that atmosphere.”
