Rangers had their sights set on one winger before the transfer window closed – but couldn’t agree a fee with his club to bring him in now.

But according to Record Sport’s resident transfer guru Scott Burns, it’s a deal which could resurface when the player’s contract is up in the summer. Philippe Clement had a quiet deadline day with loan exits for Rabbi Matondo and Kieran Dowell, as well as Zak Lovelace’s return to Milwall, as exciting as it got. That cleared space on the wage bill which the club did consider filling, but couldn’t find the right player for the job.

In the end they decided to press ahead with what they had but it’s likely they will move for at least one winger in the summer – a stance likely to be further underlined by Vaclav Cerny’s loan expiring.

Reports in Italy today suggested Monza’s Omari Forson was approached but our man says another wide man, whose contract is up in six months, was approached. But after a deal couldn’t be struck over a fee, the club decided not to bother.

But could they revisit it in the summer? Very easily. Speaking with Keith Jackson and Daniel Caw on Hotline Live, Burns said: “Rangers were looking at wingers. There was one they were interested in, a player who’s out of contract in the summer. That one could be addressed.

“The problem was he had four months left on his contract, his club were looking for a set fee which Rangers thought was too high at that point. But it’s a player they could pick up for free in the summer, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that one is revisited.”
