CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office has confirmed a Mercer County man was killed on Monday while burning brush.

The incident happened at a residence in the 700 block of Nemours Valley Road in Bluewell just after 1 p.m.

An 84-year-old man died after the fire escalated and got out of control and he collapsed while trying to put it out.

Investigators with the West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office and the Division of Forestry were called to the scene to investigate. The victim was taken to the WV Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification.
