HINTON, W.Va. – In Summers County, recent heavy rain reportedly causing a landslide to partially block one lane of state highway 20.
The landslide occurred just south of the “Veterans Memorial Bridge” in Hinton blocking the westbound lane.
Our crew captured the aftermath and the arrival of DOH to clean things up around noon today (Thursday).
We spoke with Leonard Nichols, a Pipestem resident, who says this is the third landslide in about a week and a half, and something must be done before a tragedy happens.
He says, “Last week, there’s one twice as bad as this. It would cover the car up and probably killed a couple of people easy. And I’ve signed petitions over the years at different stores, have them turned in, and Summers County won’t do anything about these walls. They’ve been contacted before, and I’ve heard that if a rock hits a car, they claimed it’s an act of God, but God didn’t create this road, man created this road and created this disaster.”
With more rain expected in the coming days, Nichols and other residents worry about the potential for more landslides along this route.
They hope local leaders will find a solution before it’s too late.
