Specialist marine rescue teams are trying to find a whale believed to be tangled in creel ropes off the coast in the North-West of Scotland.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) teams are currently trying to locate a whale possibly entangled on creel ropes off in waters near Gairloch.

However it is understood that it is not the same whale which became entangled in a rope at a fish farm off the Isle of Skye last week.

The was freed from the scene at Invertote salmon farm, near Rigg the following day.

A BDMLR spokeswoman had said members of its “large whale disentanglement team” had mobilised from across the UK and had worked with the help of the local community and emergency services to free the humpback near Skye.

Posting on Facebook last week BDMLR said : “THE WHALE IS FREE!” Organic Sea Harvest, which runs Invertote, said “Marine mammals, including dolphins and whales, are a common sight near salmon farms, but it is extremely rare for them to come into contact with our sites.”

Humpback whales can grow to 60ft in length and weigh up to 40 tons.
