A lorry has burst into flames on the M8 causing major delays during rush hour.

Emergency services raced to the blaze near Newbridge in Edinburgh after receiving the alarm at around 7.22am on Friday. A section of the motorway is currently closed eastbound at junction 2 as crews deal with the ongoing incident.

The condition of the occupants is currently unknown. Shocking footage shows the vehicle engulfed in flames on the motorway.

Multiple emergency service vehicles, including police, fire engines and ambulances, have been pictured at the scene. Aggressive flames can be seen ripping through the lorry with thick plumes of smoke shooting into the sky.

Motorists have been asked to find an alternative route.

A statement from Police Scotland reads: “The M8 eastbound is currently closed at junction 2 near Newbridge due to a lorry on fire. Emergency services are in attendance and motorists are asked to find an alternative route.”

Posting to X, Traffic Scotland said: “NEW 7.22am. M8 Junction 2-1. CLOSED Eastbound between Junction 2-1 due to a vehicle fire. Emergency services are at scene Traffic is heavy on the approach with smoke affecting vision in the area.”

The Record has approached the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service for comment.
