The expense of heating your home, especially during the colder months, can weigh heavy on many people’s minds.

And with the current cold snap and bitterly cold temperatures, boilers are still doing a lot of heavy work to keep homes warm.

The average heating bill in the UK is £106 a month, which is a sizeable sum especially when the country is is still feeling the effects of a cost-of-living crisis.

However, there are ways in which you can save money on your heating bills by implementing these simple boiler tricks.

Greenmatch Boiler Expert, Joshua Houston, says homeowners can save around £700 per year if they follow this simple advice.

Invest In Insulation

Insulating your boiler will allow it to retain more heat, and therefore use less fuel to generate steam. An insulation jacket is a good investment, as they can be picked up for as little as £20, and will save you around £10 per month. This adds up to £120 a year. Not only this, it also improves the safety of your boiler, as it will provide a layer to protect people (especially children) from burns. Alternatively, you can insulate the boiler room by adding ThermaWrap, however, this will be more expensive and will also take more time.

Reduce The Temperature

Reducing your boiler’s ‘flow temperature’ (by adjusting the control panel) is an easy way to save money on your energy bill. It allows your boiler to work more efficiently by using less energy to heat your home. You will also likely not notice a difference if the temperature is reduced by between 3-5°C. This simple trick can save you around 10% on your end-of-month bill, which equates to around £10. Due to the low effort involved, it makes it a very easy way to keep cash in your pocket.

Use Thermostatic Radiator Valves

Thermostatic radiator valves allow you to control the temperature of each individual room. This means that you can avoid wasting heat on areas of your home that you are not using. Instead, you can focus on the living areas that you regularly use to increase efficiency. If you don’t already have the valves, they can be bought for under £10 each. They provide a saving of up to 40% on your energy bill, which equates to £40 a month.

Joshua said: “February is a tough month. The increase in heating costs leaves us with less disposable income. But there are ways in which you can save a little bit of money. Even though £10 might not seem like a lot, it quickly adds up for you to spend on something else significant.

“By following the three tips above, you will save yourself over £700 a year, which pays for a holiday abroad. This goes to show that saving money doesn’t have to be a hard process, there are simple tricks that you can implement.’’
