(CNN) – Australia’s snake population just experienced a baby boom, and a Sydney homeowner witnessed it firsthand.

David Stein said he saw a few reptiles in his backyard, which is common for the area.

However, when the snake catcher dug into his mulch pile, he saw 102 snakes, including 97 newborns.

The snakes are red-bellied black snakes. Pregnant females often congregate before giving birth.

A reptile relocation organization was called, and the snakes were all collected after a few hours.

Stein said it was exciting to see the mass birth but is glad they were gone.

Officials said the snakes will be freed in a national park.
