Federal prosecutors said Andrew Taake attacked U.S. Capitol police officers with a metal whip and bear spray. He pleaded guilty last June.

HOUSTON — A Houston man sent to prison for attacking police officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and later pardoned and set free is back behind bars in Texas.

Andrew Quentin Taake, 35, of Houston, was wanted in Harris County on a 2016 charge of online solicitation of a minor, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. A surveillance operation on Tuesday confirmed that Taake was staying at a residence in Leon County. He was arrested there Thursday morning and will be returned to Harris County.

Last June, Taake was sentenced to six years in prison after he pleaded guilty to one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon on Dec. 20, 2023. According to the Department of Justice, he attacked police officers with a metal whip and bear spray.

After all of the rioters were pardoned last month by President Donald Trump, the HCSO Fugitive Warrants Division asked federal authorities to keep Taake in custody because he was wanted in Harris County. The DA’s Office said they sent the warrant to the Bureau of Prisons but Taake was released on Jan. 20.

“Re-arresting individuals, like Taake, who were released with pending State warrants, will require significant resources,” the HCDAO posted on X.
