Rangers fans who splashed out to feature on the club’s ‘Champions Wall’ have been left fuming as their pictures have yet to appear on the mosaic – nearly four years after it was announced.
Supporters of the Ibrox club have vented their anger after paying £45 to become “a part of the club’s history”, only to be left out. When the club unveiled plans for the wall back in June 2021, chiefs described it as a “landmark installation next to Ibrox Stadium“.
They added that it would “allow supporters to share their memories and photographs in a unique photomosaic that will proudly display a selection of our most famous legends and moments”.
But the mosaic made up of fan photographs remains unfinished and a dedicated website for it is also no longer available.
The club has now acknowledged the issue, saying they are “working with the supplier on a solution”.
One fan, who asked only to be known as Gregor P, told the Record: “I, like many others, paid £45 to have my photo included in the club’s ‘Champions Wall’ mosaic advertised on the club website.
“The project was started after winning our historic 55th league title three years ago but it has never been completed. Since the first phase of photographs went up in 2022, there has been zero progress with it, and many like myself have been waiting over two years for their photo to appear on the wall since paying to be part of it.
“I have emailed the club on several occasions and was assured repeatedly that my photograph was still due to appear but I was never offered an actual timeframe as to when it would happen.
“The club stopped responding to my emails after I asked for a refund in October. Then last week it was brought to my attention that the dedicated website has now been taken down. There has been no information provided to confirm or deny whether the project has been abandoned.”
The centre of the mosaic was to capture Steven Gerrard lifting the trophy after the club secured its 55th league title with the image joined by eight other champions including John Greig and Richard Gough.
The club said that profits from the wall were to be reinvested in “the wider Ibrox footprint” to assist in the plans to enhance the stadium and the matchday experience – but despite many forking out to be included, they have still not been added to the feature.
Gregor said: “When Rangers first announced this initiative it was marketed as a way for fans to be part of history. It feels like we’ve been misled and taken advantage of. The club now seems to be stonewalling anyone who asks for their money back.
“If I do not receive a refund I will be forced to take action in the small claims court. I’m very upset that I’m having to consider legal action against the club that I love and have followed since I was a boy.
“This situation has left fans out of pocket and in the dark. Rangers have seemingly abandoned the project while continuing to ignore those who financially supported it in good faith.
“Rangers’ loyal fans have been severely let down by the custodians of the club. We are due a refund and an apology for the atrocious way we have been treated.”
Other fans spoke of their frustration at the situation on Rangers’ fan forum site Follow Follow. One said: “I paid for my a photo on this nearly two years ago and still waiting on the photo going up.” Another said: “I also paid for one for my dad two years ago. Feels like we’ve been scammed really.”
A third added: “The club should accept the hit. Another marketing failure that’s gone on long enough. Just compete the damn thing using the photos they have on file. Free prizes through MyGers is another thing they could do.”
Meanwhile the Rangers History page on Twitter/X said: “The Rangers Champions Wall Website now taken down. Coming up for 3yrs. Assured 2yrs ago it would be in next batch and been ignored since. Totally unacceptable. Rangers FC need to update those who have been waiting, admit it’ll never happen and refund money.”
A Rangers spokesperson said: “Rangers is aware of supporter frustration around this issue and is working with the supplier on a solution. The club will update supporters as soon as it can.”
