A Glasgow grandmother, remembered as a spirited traveler with a love for adventure, is to be honoured by her granddaughter by raising vital funds for Cancer Research.
Janice White, affectionately known as “wee Jan Jan” by her family, lived a vibrant life exploring “exotic” locations, including owning a home in Egypt. The “wee Glaswegian wummin” left a lasting impression on everyone she met but sadly passed away from lung cancer in April 2020 at the age of 67.
Janice’s granddaughter, Megan Walker, has taken up the cause of raising money for Cancer Research UK in her memory. Megan, a 28-year-old self-employed nail technician from Springboig, is hosting a 24-hour ‘nailathon’ on April 5 at her salon, Beautsy by Meg , located on Causewayside Street in Tollcross. From 10 am that day until 10 am the following morning, Megan will work continuously, offering treatments to clients with all proceeds donated to charity.

The fundraiser will continue the following month when Megan, joined by her mum, sister, and a friend, participates in the 5K Race for Life at Glasgow Green on May 18, reports GlasgowLive.
Reflecting on her grandmother’s battle with cancer and the challenges of her “rapid decline,” Megan said: “Having a grandparent is like having a second parent, so it was hard. It’s even more difficult watching someone deteriorate during a global pandemic when you can’t even hug them.”
Janice was more than just a grandmother to Megan—she was a role model and a vibrant personality. “She was a proper wee Glaswegian wummin, trendy and amazing. She loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. She called me her ‘golden nugget,’ and if she could see me now, she’d be totally amazed and so proud.”
Megan, who started her business eight months ago, says her gran inspired her every step of the way. “I always used to do Gran’s nails with different colours. Cancer is such a big thing and scary—so many people are affected by it. I wanted to do something fun for a worthy cause.”
She added, “I’m not just doing nails. The door will be open for anyone to pop in for a cuppa and a wee chat. All proceeds from treatments will go directly to Cancer Research UK through our JustGiving page.”
The nailathon will take place at Beautsy by Meg on April 5, with all funds raised going toward the fight against cancer in honour of a beloved grandmother whose adventurous spirit lives on in her family’s efforts.
