A man and woman have been arrested after the death of a baby girl at a home in Oldham.

Police were called at around 12.56pm on Sunday to a report concerning the welfare of a baby at an address in Nelson Way, Chadderton, Greater Manchester.

The infant girl, thought to have been just five weeks old, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who did all they could to save her, the Manchester Evening News reports.

A man, 41, and woman, 21, were both arrested and taken into custody on suspicion of child neglect.

Investigations into the tragic death of the baby girl are continuing. Officers with Greater Manchester Police remained stationed at the property over the afternoon,

A spokesperson said: “Officers were called at around 12.56pm today to Nelson Way, Chadderton to a report concerning the welfare of a baby.

“Emergency services attended and despite the best efforts of paramedics, she sadly died. A man (aged 41) and a woman (aged 21) have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect. Enquiries are ongoing.”
